After a bit of an absence, here is a panoramic view of the Apalachicola River in Florida.

Sumter County (FL) Highway

Moved back south. This is really called County Highway 138 on my car's navigation system. Taken in the early morning with some ground fog present. The photograph is my attempt to study composition.

Red Pitcher 2007

Project: Still Life

Minimized photoshop work solely to building a "glow" around the central object. Posted so that I may study the effect, and possibly modify the technique

Alley 1998

Camera: Pentax PZ-10 35mm color slide
Project: Fascination with alleys and old buildings in St. Petersburg FL
I have a series of these pics, taken of the alley view of old buildings which were subsequently torn down to make way for pricey urban renewal.

I originally posted this in B&W, but upon reflection I think the original color is better. There are a minimum of colors and the rust/dirt stains make a statement as to the age and condition of the building.

Mullet Boat 1997

Camera: Pentax PZ-10 35MM Slide scan
Project: shape
This effort is a failure that I ended up liking after some photoshop adjustment. Originally the photo is of a mullet boat on a cold, slightly foggy morning with ice forming on the nets. I futzed up the exposure and the original is just too dark to be pleasing. When I realized the boat silhouette showed, I changed the fog to look like light at sunset and find the result much more interesting.

Comment: Image keeps the eye busy finding details in the lines and rigging.

McCurder Pond Leaves, 2006

Project: Yet another watercolor simulation, this time with an overdrawing simulating ink

With his permission I cribbed a photo from a friend, cropped it extensively, desaturated it, then added the outline overlay. I like it - so there!

Gate, Sandburg Estate 2005

Camera: Panasonic DMC-LZ2
Project: Experiment in the Orton technique. I'm not sure any of the online comments on this technique both understand what Michael Orton is doing, and how to emulate it in Photoshop. That includes me.

Comment: Violates a composition rule in that the gate angle and two bifurcating paths lead the eye away from the center of the image. However, my eye keeps trying to see "around" the red tree as it follows the lines and then bounce back to the center to try another path. Interesting.

Free Trade 2007

Camera: Pentax DS-2 Project: find a theme. There are so many abandoned factories around here - abandoned as the free traders moved work offshore. Photo was converted to B&W, then photoshopped to add a gritty sense to the edge portions.

Victoria Valley Vineyards 2006

Camera: Panasonic DMC-LZ2 Project: shadows to depict form. The rule of thumb is always use the golden hours just after sunrise and just before sunset. This was taken at noon, and I personally like the harsh shadows.
